After the Houston Texans playoff run eyes were immediately on what can be done to improve this team. The honeymoon is over. Coaches were fired. Shaqs were released. Last season was a thrill for most fans. But we are now in the growing pains period.
We are looking for Head Coach DeMeco Ryans, quarterback C.J. Stroud and the team to take a big step forward. We want them to get to a Super Bowl. But this blog and every other Texans based publication has been talking about how the Texans have zero cap room. “How are the Texans going to improve when there is no money to spend?”, we were all worrying. But luckily for us, Texans GM Nick Caserio is a professional and has been at work. Let’s take a look at some of the moves the Texans have made.
Releasing Shaq Mason
The veteran guard was released and the team will clear a reported $9.4 billion later this year from the move. The offensive line was rough last season. But firing the offensive coordinator and offensive line coaches.1 Releasing the veteran on the staff. These are some shake-it-up moves. Mason was a good lineman and a professional, but we like the team shaking it up a bit. (But we are worried a bit about who is going to be playing on the line next season…)
Restructuring Nico Collin’s contract
Mr. Cap-Save-io has been handing out restructures all day. The veteran wide receiver was willing to work with the team to try to find some flexibility to bring some fresh faces on the squad. The moves opens up a reported 9.8 million dollars.
Restructuring Azeez Al-Shaair’s contract
Once again, the Restructure-er is on the prowl. This time he works with Azeez to clear a reported $6.26 mil.
Trade for Christian Kirk
The Jacksonville Jaguars were reportedly going to cut Christian Kirk and the Texans got on the phone to offer up a 7th rounder. So we get a veteran wideout for a late round pick. I like the move, but don’t know what Kirk can bring. But based on how desperate the Texans were for receivers, despite the fact that I thought they were going into the season with plenty of options…I think wide receiver depth is a big deal. Even if Kirk doesn’t turn into a great number two for the Texans, I like this move to get us veteran depth. Also, Caserio is expected to restructure/extend this contract to have a better number on the books for the Texans this season.
Potential Moves
All the pundits and talking heads are saying the next targets for The Restructure-er are Danielle Hunter or Laremy Tunsil. We’ll see how flexible the cap can get, and more importantly what can be done with the extra spending room.
Vamos vamos Texans
The new Offensive Line coach, Cole Popovich, was on staff last season and was kept and promoted.
